Scientific Visualization Institute at TACC 
4-Session Series: Wednesdays 10:00-1:00 CST 
August 24 | August 31 | September 7 | September 14 
TACC's visualization experts will provide instruction on how to generate rich, informative visualizations from your simulation results and data sets. Get started with VisIt and Paraview among other technologies, to learn the basics of developing interesting and worthwhile geographic and information visualizations.

HPC Leadership Institute in Cooperation with Microsoft and MITRE 
September 12-14
In-Person Only, Full days 
The High Performance Computing (HPC) Leadership Institute is specifically tailored to managers and decision makers who are using, or considering using, HPC within their organizations. It is also applicable to those with a real opportunity to make this career step in the near future. Topics covered will include procurement considerations, pricing and capital expenditures, operating expenditures, and cost/benefit analysis of adding HPC to a company's or institution's R&D portfolio. A broad scope of HPC is covered from department scale clusters to the largest supercomputers, modeling and simulation to non-traditional use cases, and more. We encourage attendees from diverse backgrounds and underrepresented communities.

TACC Symposium for Texas Researchers 

September 28-30, 2022 

We are pleased to announce the fifth annual TACC Symposium for Texas Researchers (TACCSTER) being held on September 28-30, 2022, in person in the ACB building on the J.J. Pickle Research Campus (PRC) of The University of Texas at Austin. 

TACCSTER is a meeting of scientists, engineers and scholars from across the state who use, and would like to use, the Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC) to advance their research goals. Researchers from across the country are welcome to attend. 

This meeting will be an opportunity for you to: 
- Showcase your ongoing research involving TACC resources 
- Learn new and useful computing skills from a variety of tutorials 
- Network with other TACC users / researchers 
- Hear information about the latest TACC systems and services

Due to BIOS updates that had to be included in the maintenance window after it was scheduled, we are extending the Stampede2 maintenance. The originally planned tasks are completed and the system will be returned to production as soon as possible.

The annual Big Data in Biology Summer School 2022 courses are now open for registration! The Center for Biomedical Research Support (CBRS) offers seven intensive courses that span introductions to biocomputing, Python programming, and high-throughput DNA and RNA sequencing analysis. These courses offer unique opportunities to gain and polish skills for biological data analysis across a wide spectrum of topics. 

Courses last from 4 to 5 days. Students can take multiple courses and build up data analysis skills from week to week. 

This year, some classes will be in person, some hybrid, and others completely online. UT Austin students, faculty, and staff receive a great discount off the regular course fee. 

We will cover the following topics:

Stampede2 lifetime extended and adding Intel Ice Lake nodes

The National Science Foundation (NSF) has extended operational funding for Stampede 2 through June 2023. Prior to the extension, the life of the system was expected to end in September 2022. This extension will allow the system to continue supporting world-class science for an additional nine...

The National Science Foundation (NSF) has extended operational funding for Stampede 2 through June 2023. Prior to the extension, the life of the system was expected to end in September 2022. This extension will allow the system to continue supporting world-class science for an additional nine months. 


As part of the extension, 448 of the oldest Intel Knights Landing Xeon Phi nodes will be replaced with 224 of the latest generation of Dell PowerEdge R650 two-socket servers utilizing the Intel Xeon Platinum 8380 "Ice Lake" processors. These latest servers will provide more than double the performance and almost triple the memory of the previous nodes to provide additional capability for the Stampede2 system. All 224 of the new nodes will be accessible via the "icx-normal" production queue, with development needs still being provided via the Skylake "skx-dev" queue.
