Lonestar5 scratch filesystem access ends 1July2022

The Lonestar5 /scratch filesystem has been kept available on Lonestar6 since going into production (mounted read-only on login nodes as /scratch_old) to allow all our previous Lonestar5 users to migrate their data over to the new Lonestar6. The last day to access /scratch_old will be July 1, 2022....

The Lonestar5 /scratch filesystem has been kept available on Lonestar6 since going into production (mounted read-only on login nodes as /scratch_old) to allow all our previous Lonestar5 users to migrate their data over to the new Lonestar6. The last day to access /scratch_old will be July 1, 2022. Following that the mount will be removed and the hardware supporting the filesystem will be removed from the machine room in early July, and thus no further data will be retrievable from the old Lonestar5 filesystem. Please use this final week of availability if you have and data that still needs to be migrated.

Frontera is experiencing a filesystem problem affecting /scratch1. One storage target on /scratch1 is offline and users might experience hangs trying to access files on that target. TACC staff are working to return the filesystem to full production as soon as possible.

Frontera Pathways and LSCP Opportunities open through June 15

We are pleased to announce the Frontera Pathways and Frontera Large Scale Community Partnership (LSCP) allocation tracks are open through June 15. Resources available for request include Frontera and its GPU subsystem, as well as the Longhorn GPU resource. 

Pathways

Smaller allocations from 10,000 to 250,000 node-hours to science teams with a strong scientific justification for access to a leadership-class computing resource, but who have not yet demonstrated code readiness to effectively utilize such a resource. Successful applicants will use the allocation award to work with the Frontera team to scale their codes in order to effectively use the system. Successful applicants must demonstrate existing research funding to support the required code and algorithm development activities on Frontera. Additionally, early career scientists and engineers with an outstanding publication record investigating novel techniques for solving potentially transformative S&E research topics are encouraged to apply.

Large-Scale Community Partnerships (LSCP)

Allocations from 25,000 to 1,000,000 node-hours to support a large and typically multi-institutional community of users and beneficiaries working on the same research topic, who collectively justify the need for this scale of HPC resource but individually would not. Extended allocations can be requested for up to three years to support long-lived S&E experiments. Successful applicants must demonstrate current peer-reviewed research funding to support the activities conducted on Frontera for the time period requested. The LSCP process will make merit-based allocation awards annually for allocations spanning three years, with years 2 and 3 awarded after successful completion of a progress review including an updated computational plan for the next year.

After reading the allocations policy and guidelines, you may determine that a startup allocation would be beneficial to do code performance and benchmarking to be incorporated into your Pathways or LSCP proposal. Frontera and part of Longhorn will be reserved for Texascale Days beginning April 5, 2021. Researchers on Frontera will be running extreme scale jobs from 4K to 8K nodes, and on a subset of Longhorn nodes (~60). Frontera will return to production operation following the April 12 scheduled maintenance. Longhorn will resume production on or about April 

 

For Frontera, while nearly the entire system is reserved for these runs, the rtx, rtx-dev, nvdimm, and development queues will remain in production with the exception that the development nodes will be unavailable on Sunday, April 10.

Stampede2 lifetime extended and adding Intel Ice Lake nodes

The National Science Foundation (NSF) has extended operational funding for Stampede 2 through June 2023. Prior to the extension, the life of the system was expected to end in September 2022. This extension will allow the system to continue supporting world-class science for an additional nine months. 


As part of the extension, 448 of the oldest Intel Knights Landing Xeon Phi nodes will be replaced with 224 of the latest generation of Dell PowerEdge R650 two-socket servers utilizing the Intel Xeon Platinum 8380 "Ice Lake" processors. These latest servers will provide more than double the performance and almost triple the memory of the previous nodes to provide additional capability for the Stampede2 system. All 224 of the new nodes will be accessible via the "icx-normal" production queue, with development needs still being provided via the Skylake "skx-dev" queue.

Software containers are an important common currency for portable and reproducible computing. Learn best practices on building, using, and sharing Docker and Singularity containers in this hands-on workshop. Also learn how to run those containers on TACC HPC systems, including MPI and GPU aware containers.

From 2:10 to 6:30 pm CST network disruption prevented users from being able to access TACC systems. The issue has been resolved.

Lonestar6 will be unavailable on Monday, 10 January from 8AM to 1PM (CST)  in preparation of transitioning from the "Early User" phase to "Production" on Tuesday, January 11.
