Dear Colleague,

I wanted to call your attention to the web site for allocations on the NSF Frontera resource: https://fronteraweb.tacc.utexas.edu/allocations/

We are currently accepting proposals for the largest tier of allocations, the Leadership Resource Allocations.  Proposals will be accepted through January 17th 2020.  Proposal submission will open for the Pathways and Community Partnership allocations on January 20th, and those will be accepted through March 8th.

We also wanted to make sure you’ve noticed we’ve made the GPU resources available on Frontera.  Separate allocation requests are not required for these resources; if you have an existing allocation or are requesting a new one, Frontera SUs can be used on the CPU or GPU resources.

I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday season, and as always, if you have questions or requests, don’t hesitate to ask!  Please submit any questions you may have through the TACC Consulting System or feedback form.

Thanks,
  Dan

We are pleased to announce the Introduction to PETSc Training being held on February 6th, 2020 from 9am to 4pm CT.

The Portable Extensible Toolkit for Scientific Computing (PETSc) provides a framework for the development of computational science codes. Its focus is on solving linear and nonlinear systems, but it is more than a collection of algorithms: it is a complete toolkit supporting parallel data structures, linear algebra, PDEs, meshes. PETSc is designed for scalable parallelism and contains debugging and profiling support. This course will discuss the basic PETSc objects and how they make up a PETSc code. Upon completion of this course, you should be able to independently develop scalable scientific simulation codes with the PETSc library.

This training will be available to both in-person and remote attendees via webcast. Local participants are strongly encouraged to attend in-person.

We are pleased to announce the HPC Application Tutorial: VASP on Frontera and Stampede2 Training being held on December 5th, 2019 from 1pm to 4pm CT. This new training module helps beginner and intermediate users of the VASP software package to carry out calculations with desirable performance and efficient usage of resources on TACC systems. It covers basic procedures for running VASP on TACC systems like Frontera and Stampede2, including:

- how to use a TACC supercomputer,
- how to gain access to the TACC installed VASP software environment,
- how to build VASP in licensed user's accounts for debugging, and
- how to build VASP in licensed user’s accounts with 3rd-party extensions.

The training also introduces the general steps for determining the task topology for optimal performance and scaling of VASP jobs under the TACC computing environment. Furthermore, we present and explain some of the most common issues and solutions to help users save effort in troubleshooting VASP related errors.

This training focuses on the system and computing environment aspects and how to run VASP efficiently on TACC systems. It is not a tutorial for researchers on how to use VASP to solve science problems. Users need to refer VASP manual and forum for that purpose.

We are pleased to announce the Introduction To Parallel Programming Using The Interactive Parallelization Tool (IPT) Training being held on October 18th, 2019 from 1:30pm to 4:30pm CT.

Parallel programming is critical for efficiently using not only the current and future generation large-scale supercomputing platforms but also the now ubiquitous many-core and multi-core processors found in commodity hardware. In this 3-hour, beginner-level tutorial on parallel programming, we will introduce you to the parallel programming concepts, OpenMP, and MPI using the Interactive Parallelization Tool (IPT).

This training will be available to both in-person and remote attendees via webcast. Local participants are strongly encouraged to attend in-person.

We are pleased to announce the C++ for C Programmers Training being held on September 13th, 2019 from 9am to 5pm CT.

C++ can be considered as a superset of C, but this view often leads to un-idiomatic C++ programming. In this short course we both show the new mechanisms of C++, and we explain what C mechanisms, while available, should no longer be used.

The first half of this course covers mostly object-oriented programming and parameter passing with references; the second half covers advanced topics such as smart pointers, exceptions, iterators, lambdas, templates. It will be pointed which features are specific to the C++14 and C++17 standards.

This training will be available to both in-person and remote attendees via webcast. Local participants are strongly encouraged to attend in-person.
